You should not be afraid, Vienna isn’t on fire. You couldn’t do that to Vienna. Why should there be another way to enjoy Vienna in Ashes: liquid, with smoke and chocolate. I want to show you a great recipe that I got when I visited Vienna in autumn 2019.
On my trip to Stockholm in Sweden in July 2019, I got to know many Swedish cocktails. The three most interesting and unusual Swedish cocktails, I would like to introduce you here.
NORDIC TRACK
STORY
This Swedish cocktail Nordic Track is grassy, refreshing and sweet with extra fruity bite from the lingonberry sauce garnish.
Muddle the mint together with the vinegar in a mixing glass.
Add ice, the gum syrup and Aquavit.
Shake it!
Strain into a glass over fresh ice.
Garnish with the lingonberry jam and a mint sprig.
HALLON-LAKRITS
STORY
Hallon-Lakrits is a festive candy drink that tastes just as the Swedish name promises – raspberries and licorice. So, just like the popular raspberry peel. Worth mentioning is also that this is a drink that one can very easily vary to adapt to their own taste preferences. This stated recipe is only a good basic recipe.
INGREDIENTS
60 ml/ 2 oz. Sourz Raspberry
10 ml/ ⅓ oz. Pernod
20 ml/ ¾ oz. Grenadine
10 ml/ ⅓ oz. lemon juice
80 ml/ 2 ¾ oz. soda water
METHOD
Fill a glass half with crushed ice.
Add Sourz Raspberry, Pernod, Grenadine and lemon juice.
Stir so that everything mixes.
Add the soda water and fill the rest of the glass with ice.
Stir slightly and garnish with a lakrits stick.
NOTES
It’s all about finding a balance in the flavors you like. If you think it’s too low in licorice, you can easily increase the amount of Pernod. If you want the drink a little sweeter, you can try to use Seven Up or Sprite instead of soda. Since they are a little sweeter, you may need to add some extra lemon juice. Do not be afraid to try different variants.
FIZZY POP
STORY
Fizzy Pop is exactly what it sounds like – a drink that tastes like Sweden’s most popular candy piece. Some call them Bubblizz, others for Fizzypop. Whatever you call them, this is the drink recipe you’ve been looking for!
Add Sprite and stir gently so that the bubbles do not disappear.
Add more ice if there is space.
Gently pour Blue Curaçao in the top of the glass so that the blue color spreads slightly downwards.
Garnish with candy.
NOTES
The secret sauce in this drink is undoubtedly the bubble gum from Monin. It tastes almost exactly like the Fizzy pop / Bubblizz candies it is, just much sweeter. The other ingredients are therefore mostly to balance the flavors, get the liquid and alcohol volume and to make the drink visually more appealing. The syrup is alcohol-free and available to order online or to buy in some specialty stores.
SHOPPING LIST
If you do not want to go to Stockholm (Sweden), you can also make the cocktails easily at home.
In August 2019 I was in Albania. I took the ferry from Corfu in Greece to the port of Sarandë in Albania. Arrived in Sarandë, the bartender Klajdi from the 21 Bar was already waiting for me. In the 21 Bar Klajdi showed me the production of two different cocktails. The first cocktail has the same name as the cocktail bar: 21 Bar Cocktail. The second Cocktail is called Mrs PINK You can find the 21 Bar in Sarandë in the Rruga Skënderbeu near the harbor and the waterfront. The decor is very exceptional and made with love. You can sit inside and outside. And the cocktails are really excellent and the staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. So let’s go to Albania!.
INGREDIENTS
Vodka
Ursus
lime juice (freshly squeezed)
METHOD
Combine all ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake.
In the 21 Bar in Sarandë I really liked it. That’s why Klajdi showed me a second cocktail. His name is Mrs. PINK and tastes wonderful. Which maybe was because I love Sambuca. So if you ever come to Sarandë, I highly recommend the 21 Bar.
Here I want to show you the recipe of the Greek Sazerac from FLAWS High End Cocktailbar in Rhodes (Town). In the June of 2019 I was in Rhodes Town in Greece and visited the Cocktailbar there. At Flaws the bartender Angelo showed me, how to make the cocktail “GREEK SAZERAC”. If you ever come to Rhodes, I would highly recommend Flaws cocktailbar in Rhodos Town. And you should taste there the Greek Sazerac.
INGREDIENTS
Ouzo
sugar cubes
cucumber and Peychaud`s bitters
Metaxa***** Brandy
Ice cubes
METHOD
Put ice in a glass and add some Ouzo and mix it easily.
Take another glass and add two sugar cubes.
Add cucumber and Peychaud`s bitters.
Destroy the sugar cubes.
Fill Metaxa***** Brandy into the glass and mix it easily.
Add ice cubes and stir it to perfection.
Mix the Ouzu again and get away with it.
Give the Metaxa mix into the empty flavoured ouzo glass
And add a great ice cube.
NOTES
The Ouzo is poured during production from the Greek Sazerak. As a result, only the flavor of Ouzo remains in the glass. A very interesting taste composition. Thanks to the Flaws team for letting me try that.
In the spring of 2019 I travelled to Palma de Mallorca and visited the Atlantico cocktail bar. A very interesting bar, where the bartenders Paula and Vernando showed me how to make the cocktail “A NIGHT IN PALMA”. If you ever come to Mallorca, I would highly recommend the Atlantico cocktail bar.
